What is the Courage of Carly Fund?

Funding critical childhood cancer research

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only organization in Western New York conducting childhood cancer research. Support from the Courage of Carly Fund helps researchers discover more effective, less invasive treatments that give children facing cancer more hope for the future.

Support for the whole family

When a child is diagnosed with something as serious as cancer or a blood disorder, the entire family is affected. At Roswell Park, our pediatric psychosocial team works alongside our clinical experts to provide not only exceptional medical care, but also the emotional, educational and psychosocial support children and families need throughout treatment.

Support from the Courage of Carly Fund helps make programs like these (and more) possible:

Family counseling

Therapeutic play and art programs

Activities in clinic

Educational advocacy

Beads of Courage and the Aflac Duck

Family comfort packages

End of treatment and milestone celebrations

Wellness programs

Making moments

Courage of Carly provides more than 35 event opportunities for pediatric patients and their families annually. Some examples include Teen Prom, Hockey Fights Cancer, holiday party, trips to the zoo, movie nights and Trunk or Treat. These events take away from the stress, anxiety and challenges of treatment, and give kids a chance to be kids.

Collaborative, comprehensive care

Through the Roswell Park Golisano Children’s Buffalo Cancer and Blood Disorders Program, children receive expert, family-centered care from a collaborative team of specialists across Western New York.

This partnership combines the expertise of Roswell Park — the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in New York State outside of New York City — and Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo to provide comprehensive care for children with cancer and blood disorders. Inpatient care is provided at Golisano, while outpatient care is available at Roswell Park’s Katherine, Anne and Donna Gioia Pediatric Hematology Oncology Center.

Thanks to this partnership, there are new capabilities and specialized services available, such as:

An expanded bone marrow transplant program for children of all ages. This gives our youngest patients access to transplants at Roswell Park for the first time.

An expanded blood disorder program to treat nonmalignant disorders such as sickle cell disease, anemias, bleeding conditions and thrombosis (blood clots).

The Pediatric Experimental Therapeutics Program, which offers new, advanced, experimental treatments, therapies and medicines to children with all types of cancer.
